Hard drive density is constantly on the rise, the availability of 1TB platters now means much higher capacity drives particularly in the 3.5" form factor where there is adequate space for as many as five platters. Even though manufacturers are still recovering from the effects of the Thai floods hard drive innovation continues to push forward. 4TB drives are now available in the Japanese market and will be arriving in Europe and North America very shortly.
The HDS5C4040ALE630 is a four 1TB platter 3.5" drive with a total capacity of 4TB with a 32MB cache buffer. It uses the latest SATA III 6GB/s interface and we also know it is a Hitachi Deskstar operating at 5900RPM. There is no word from any other manufacturers yet on the 4TB drives but expect more to come soon from the likes of Seagate and Western Digital. The price of this particular drive currently stands at about £220/$345/€259.
