Strong quarter for Intel as Nvidia and AMD fall behind in sales

The figures from the research firm "Jon Peddie Research" have recently been released to show us what is going on in the PC graphics market with regards to how much is being sold and who is selling it. Overall sales for Q2 of 2011 were up an impressive 6.3%, which corresponds slightly to the overall PC shipments figure being up 2.4% too. Intel did surprisingly well thanks to the Integrated GPU chips on the SandyBridge processors and Atom processors. The strong figures posted from Intel sees them increase their market share by 6 percentage points, while AMD lost 3.5 percentage points and Nvidia 2.4 percentage points. You can see a table summary below:

Jon Peddie also commented on the difficulties when carrying out these surveys as smartphones and Tablets have an increasing impact on graphics unit sales by influencing sales of mainly notebooks and laptops. The sales also seem to support the idea that the new APUs from AMD are going to swing the balance in AMD's favour as Intel's integrated chips have done that for Intel and integrated Intel graphics are of much lower performance but similarly price.
