HD 7990 to launch Q1 of 2012

We have been  engulfed in the hype of the HD 7970 for the past month so much so that we almost forgotten of the looming giant that awaits us. The HD 7990 is due for launch in Q1 of 2012, so potentially we could see it in just a few weeks and at longest 2 months. The HD 7990 is obviously following AMD tradition and will be created by putting two of the fastest series GPUs onto a single PCB or in this case two HD 7970 GPUs which are currently the fastest single GPUs in the world.

Unsurprisingly the HD 7990 will pack 6GB of GDDR5 memory since each HD 7970 GPU has 3GB each. And the HD 7990 will carry the codename of New Zealand. But we pretty much knew all this already. The big news is AMD's new energy saving technology to be implemented on these cards. Essentially what it does is when a CrossfireX system idles all GPUs are completely powered down except the first one which is idled to help maintain the display. In a HD 7990 card the same  rule applies as it runs on an internal CrossfireX set up.

AMD is calling this new technology ZeroCore and essentially it will mean during idle times, Blu Ray playback and HD playback the HD 7990 card will have power consumption the same as a HD 7970.
