Android 4.0 to arrive within a few months

The Google Executive Eric Schmidt has told reporters that the "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating system otherwise known as Android 4.0 will arrive within the next few months, so in between October and December. Currently, tablets are being pushed out in large numbers on the "Honeycomb" operating system, Android 3.0, and smartphones are being made with the Android 2.3 or Gingerbread operating system.

Google claims the new Android 4.0 will marry the 3.0 and 2.3 versions together with support for both smartphones and tablets but will also bring the significant changes for both hardware types.

Although the announcement wasn't made as an official statement Eric Schmidt was caught off guard saying:

"We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone’s really excited about."

Details of what will be new are few and far between but from the rumours so far it seems that facial recognition, a dedicated multi-tasking icon and updated notification menu are likely to be the biggest changes.
